Russian news agencies have reported that a Russian military jet has been shot down over Turkey near the Syrian border.
According to the reports, the Russian defence ministry said the plane was on a bombing mission in Syria and crashed after it came under artillery attack from the ground.
Moscow insists the Su-24 jet did not violate the Turkish airspace, but Turkey says it warned the aircraft several times before shooting it down.
Turkish military officials said Turkish F-16s had shot down the plane after repeatedly warning its pilots that they were violating Turkish airspace. Turkey, a staunch critic of Mr Assad, has warned against violations of its airspace by Russian and Syrian aircraft.
The Russian ministry said the pilots ejected but Moscow has had no further contact with them.
